Crazy Beautiful Broken World

Vicarious Trauma is a term used in psychotherapy to describe the impact on therapists of repeatedly engaging with and responding empathically to the trauma of others, resulting in what is commonly referred to as burnout. As a psychotherapist I am familiar with this phenomenon. However, we are all at risk of vicarious trauma. Everyday each of us is exposed to millions of pieces of information all describing the state of affairs in the world around us; war, famine, global warming, earthquakes, political instability and social inequalities. A world out of balance. In psychotherapy, the advice to therapists is “Self Care” - take care of yourself so that you can continue to care for others.

As an artist, creating art is my way of taking time out from the trauma of the world. Photography, in particular, never ceases to surprise me with so many gifts hidden in plain sight, it allows me to find the sublime in the subliminal.

My artwork is in many ways a celebration of, and indulgence in, self-soothing beauty, a necessary escape from the chaos and the catastrophe. On the other hand, whilst the beauty I find in the world is certainly real, the intention in my work is also to acknowledge the tension created by the human imprint and the undeniable truth that all is most certainly not well with the world.
