Making Art

A Cambridge based artist, I have a shared studio space with Cambridge Art Salon in Chesterton and also work from my home in Fulbourn, just a few miles outside of Cambridge.

It is my intention that these altered landscapes reflect the tension between all that is beautiful and the extensive damage that has been inflicted, socially, politically & environmentally on our world.

The images usually begin with a walk, sometimes a hike but often just a walk. I take photographs - lots of them - I’m very slow to walk with. Afterwards I spend several hours sorting through the photographs, playing with simple edits; cropping, saturation, hue. A small selection of these photographs will become the inspiration for a painting - almost always using oil pastels. I find oil pastels blend beautifully, when worked correctly, without becoming muddy. I like to work with my fingers or perhaps a palette knife but often I will use anything I have to hand; pieces of card, wire scourers, forks, knives.

As oil pastels never fully dry, they remain prone to smudging and vulnerable to dust. To protect them, the paintings should always be mounted behind glass.

The Expanded photography pieces may be physically and/or digitally manipulated. Some are digital blends of an oil pastel painting and the original source photograph - often in it’s unedited form. Others have been physically manipulated and re photographed to create the final image and some are purely digital creations. They can be printed in various sizes and on photographic or Fine Art Papers.
